Understading Travel & Club Lacrosse
Over the past several years, travel lacrosse has grown rapidly — there are now more teams than ever before. These programs typically run outside of the spring Sparta Youth Lacrosse season and give above-average to elite players the opportunity to challenge themselves alongside others with similar skills and dedication.
Below is our guide and stance on travel and club lacrosse, designed to help families decide whether it’s the right fit for their player.
Levels of Lacrosse
1. Town / Recreation Teams
That’s us — Sparta Youth Lacrosse!
We are a residency-based program that fields teams by grade level to help build strong fundamentals and future success at the Sparta High School level.
Our goal is to make lacrosse in our town as competitive and enjoyable as possible while keeping the focus on community, teamwork, and skill development.
2. Travel / Club Teams
These programs require tryouts and bring together players from multiple towns.
-
Practices and games are held outside of Sparta.
-
Teams participate in fall and summer tournaments.
-
Most tournaments are within driving distance but often require overnight stays.
-
Travel teams are designed for above-average to elite players looking for a higher level of play.
3. National Teams
National teams represent the top level of competition, featuring the best players from various club programs across the region or country.
These teams travel to compete against other elite programs in states such as Maryland, Florida, Colorado, California, and Texas.
Is Travel Lacrosse Right for Your Family?
Here are some key things to consider before committing:
-
Passion for the Game
Your child should truly love lacrosse and have a strong desire to get better. Travel lacrosse is a big step—it requires motivation, hard work, and a commitment to growth. -
Skill Level
Travel teams are built for above-average players. If you’re unsure whether your child is ready, please reach out to the Sparta Youth Lacrosse board for an honest assessment.
Be cautious—some programs are more focused on profit than player development.
For players still developing, consider investing in clinics, small-group sessions, or private lessons instead. We can recommend trusted local training options. -
Age & Readiness
We generally recommend waiting until at least after 4th grade. Let your player enjoy the game, gain experience, and grow at their own pace. -
Financial Commitment
Expect to spend between $1,800–$5,000 for team tuition, plus additional costs for travel, hotels, meals, and uniforms.
On average, families invest around $6,000 per year in total. -
Time Commitment
-
Tryouts: Typically held in July for the upcoming season.
-
Fall: 90-minute Sunday practices (mid-September through October), followed by two November tournaments.
-
Winter: Weekly indoor sessions from December through February.
-
Spring: Most teams take a break during the town season.
-
Summer: Practices 2–3 times per week with tournaments on weekends through mid-July.
-
Why Families Choose Club Lacrosse
Players who commit to travel programs often see faster growth thanks to:
-
Professional coaching
-
Exposure to higher competition
-
Additional practice and game time
Many of the area’s top high school athletes play for club teams and have dedicated countless hours to training and improvement.
That said, it’s important to note:
-
Club lacrosse does not guarantee success or college recruitment.
-
Real progress depends on individual effort outside of practices and games.
-
Some kids simply want to play locally and have fun — and that’s completely okay!
Keeping It in Perspective
Like any sport, every athlete has a different ceiling. Fewer than 3% of high school athletes go on to play in college.
Even at the collegiate level, lacrosse scholarships are limited:
-
Division I players may receive up to 50% athletic aid (and often less).
-
Division II scholarships are typically smaller.
-
Division III programs do not offer athletic scholarships, though strong academics can lead to academic awards.
For most players, the true rewards of travel lacrosse are development, discipline, friendships, and the love of the game — not scholarships or guarantees.
